Hamburger Steak with Mushroom Gravy


For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 pound ground beef (lean)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup diced onion
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste


  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into oval-shaped patties.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a bit of oil. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they’re cooked through. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced mushrooms and diced onion. Sauté until the mushrooms are browned and the onion is translucent.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and onions. Stir well to combine and cook for about 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  6. Gradually add the beef or vegetable broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Allow the gravy to simmer and thicken.
  7. If using heavy cream, stir it into the gravy and let it simmer for another minute.
  8. Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning some of the mushroom gravy over the top. Let them heat through for a few minutes.
