Hamburger Steak with Mushroom Gravy
Ingredients:
For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1 pound ground beef (lean)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Mushroom Gravy:
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/4 cup diced onion
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef or vegetable broth
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into oval-shaped patties.
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a bit of oil. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they’re cooked through. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced mushrooms and diced onion. Sauté until the mushrooms are browned and the onion is translucent.
- Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and onions. Stir well to combine and cook for about 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Gradually add the beef or vegetable broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Allow the gravy to simmer and thicken.
- If using heavy cream, stir it into the gravy and let it simmer for another minute.
- Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
- Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning some of the mushroom gravy over the top. Let them heat through for a few minutes.
