🧾 Ingredients
- 1½ lb (680 g) ground beef, preferably 85–90% lean
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter
- 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese, optional
👩🍳 Instructions
1. Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Lightly grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish and set aside.
2. Cook the beef
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the ground beef and cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon until browned and fully cooked.
Drain excess grease if necessary.
3. Sauté the vegetables
Add the olive oil or butter to the skillet if needed.
Add the sliced onion and bell peppers. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they soften and develop lightly browned edges.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30–60 seconds.
4. Season the filling
Return the cooked beef to the skillet if you removed it.
Add Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
Stir everything together and cook for another 1–2 minutes so the flavors combine.
5. Make it creamy
Reduce the heat to low.
Add the softened cream cheese and heavy cream. Stir continuously until the cream cheese melts and creates a smooth, creamy coating around the beef and vegetables.
6. Assemble the casserole
Transfer the beef mixture to the prepared casserole dish.
Spread it into an even layer.
Sprinkle the provolone and mozzarella evenly over the top. Add cheddar if desired.
7. Bake
Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 15–20 minutes, until the cheese is completely melted and bubbling around the edges.
For a more golden top, broil for 1–2 minutes, watching carefully so the cheese doesn’t burn.
8. Rest and serve
Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.
This allows the creamy filling to settle and makes it easier to portion.
🥑 Keto Tips
- Use full-fat cream cheese and cheese for a richer keto casserole.
- Choose Worcestershire sauce with little or no added sugar.
- Keep the onion portion moderate because onions contain more carbohydrates than most non-starchy vegetables.
- For an even lower-carb version, replace some of the onion with extra mushrooms or zucchini.
- Serve with a simple green salad, steamed broccoli, or cauliflower mash instead of bread or potatoes.
🧀 Optional Philly-Style Variation
For an extra cheesesteak-style finish, place a few slices of provolone cheese directly over the casserole during the final 5 minutes of baking. Let them melt into a golden, bubbly layer
